Our Mission to Make Retail More Sustainable

At Optoro, we’re transforming retail by eliminating waste from returns. Inefficient processing in reverse logistics results in products ending up in landfills and unnecessary carbon emissions from the transport of returns and excess goods. With better technology, retailers can manage returns in a more sustainable way, reducing waste and enabling a circular economy. Learn more about how our solutions have a positive impact on the environment in our annual impact report.

From customer initiation to warehouse processing and resale, we offer powerful solutions for retailers and brands looking to improve outcomes across all points in the returns lifecycle and divert waste from landfill. By partnering with leading brands and retailers, our solutions have enabled the following1:

13.1 million lbs of waste diverted from landfill
45.9 million lbs of carbon emissions prevented
4.6 million items donated to charities

Reduce Waste

Traditionally, returned and excess inventory is sold in bulk, then shipped multiple times over the course of several months before reaching an end consumer. This process is inefficient and wasteful, and provides almost no transparency into the full life cycle of a product. Our solutions give retailers the ability to route each returned and excess item to its next best home, diverting product from landfill by reducing touches and partnering with donation and recycling organizations. Retailers using our solutions were able to keep 95% of their returned and excess inventory out of landfill in 2021.2 On average, our clients see a 25% reduction in waste to landfill and a 20% reduction in carbon emissions from returns and excess goods.3

Close the Loop

Retailers are adopting circular business models to drive growth while also meeting consumer demand for delivering on sustainability. Optimizing returns is a critical component of building a more circular retail industry. Optoro gives retailers tools to instantly relist returned and excess products to recommerce or donation channels, route products that need repair to refurbishers, or recycle materials that can be manufactured into new products. Improve Transparency

Optoro’s solutions give retailers the ability to obtain unit-level data on where returned or excess units end up in the supply chain. Retailers have access to the data needed for enhanced CSR and compliance reporting. Optoro works with certified downstream partners who refurbish, harvest parts, or properly recycle any products that cannot be resold or donated. Our R2-certified recycling partners handle electronics responsibly and protect consumer data privacy.
